Christian Medical Association of India is pioneer in healthcare education conducting unique training programmes for more than 90 years in our country. In fact an act of parliament of India, recognizes its nursing education programme, which further acknowledges that CMAI has a pro-poor approach and substantial reach through member institutions for training of Allied Health Professionals in India. CMAI has identified specific need areas for AHP, pioneered training in them whilst ensuring relevance, high quality and affordability for all professionals. In 1927, CMAI had conducted its first certificate training in Medical Laboratory Technology at Arogyavaram Medical Center, Andhra Pradesh.
Deriving from a need to deliver quality Allied Health education, CMAI had set up the Central Education Board (CEB) of CMAI, which accredits training in several Allied Health Profession areas such as Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Radiation Technology, Medical Record Technology, Ophthalmic Technology, Anaesthesia Technicians Technology, Post Graduate in Counselling and Addiction Therapies and much more. Each of these are administered through a training committee comprising of experts in the respective fields volunteering their time for this purpose. Each training committee designs and updates the curriculum, accredits centres, conducts examinations and certifies successful completion of the training by candidates.
In total, there are 30 courses across 60 Training Centres in India with more than 600 students trained annually. CMAI courses are well accepted nationally and even globally for their quality and high standards. Govt Recognition of these high-quality courses is being pursued both at national and state level. CMAI’s resource books for students in Allied Health programs are recommended reading by the Manipal Academy of Higher Education.
The Central Education Board consists of the President, General Secretary, a member appointed by each of the executive committees of the Administrators, Allied Health Professionals, Chaplains, Doctors, and Nurses Sections of CMAI, three person from the field of education appointed by the assembly, the secretaries of the Boards of Nursing of CMAI, two staff members (AHP Secretary and representative from Community Health Department), conveners of the various training committees who are not members in their own right.
