Overview
The Doctors Section and the UP-UK Region of the Christian Medical Association of India (CMAI) recently organized a vital webinar titled "The Church’s Pastoral Role for Trauma and Mental Health: A New Imagination for Christian Care." Led by Dr Santhosh Mathew, President of CMAI, the session challenged Church and healthcare leaders to move beyond traditional medical models toward a wholistic "Wounded Healer" approach.
Participation and Reach
The event saw overwhelming engagement from across the country, highlighting the urgency of mental health discourse within the faith community.
The webinar saw significant engagement with over 150 registrations and approximately 200 total attendees, more than 150 of whom remained active for over an hour. Registration data indicated that 43.8% of participants had prior knowledge of trauma and mental health, while 26.6% had no prior understanding and roughly 30% reported only limited familiarity with the subject.
Participation was geographically diverse, with the top five regions collectively accounting for 70% of the audience. The UP and UK region led with 24% of participants, followed by Tamil Nadu and Puducherry at 14%, Maharashtra and Goa at 11%, the North East at 11%, and Kerala at 9%.
Key Insights and Themes
1. A Legacy of Care
Dr Santhosh Mathew reminded participants that the Church has a historical mandate for healthcare. During the Plague of Cyprian (250–262 AD), when secular professionals fled, the Church stepped in to care for the sick. The webinar called for a return to this legacy, viewing healthcare not just as a professional service, but as a community of caring.
2. Shifting the Theological Paradigm
The session addressed the "disintegration" of the human person in modern theology:
Body vs. Soul: Moving away from the "Body as a Machine" view where healing is merely an entry point for evangelism.
Emotional Christianity: Challenging the stigma that mental health struggles (like depression) are purely "spiritual issues" or a "lack of faith."
Wholistic Integration: Emphasizing that humans are an integrated unity of body, mind, and spirit.
The "Wounded Healer"
Drawing on the work of Henri Nouwen, Dr Santhosh Mathew explored the concept of the Wounded Healer. He emphasized that leaders do not need to hide their wounds to be effective. Instead, by being vulnerable and sharing their own journeys—as Dr Ronald Lalthanmawia did by sharing his experience of isolation during COVID-19—leaders create a safe space for others to seek healing.
Modern Context: Loneliness and Gen Z
The webinar touched upon the "Loneliness Epidemic" (WHO 2025) and the sharp rise in depression among Gen Z since the social media boom of 2014. It was noted that while hospitals often focus on physical health, 60% of young people feel their mental health is neglected by the current healthcare system.
3. Moving Forward: The Church’s Response
The webinar concluded with actionable steps for Church and mission leadership:
As Dr Santhosh Mathew noted, "A church that ignores mental health is irrelevant to the health needs of its members and the mission field." CMAI remains committed to integrating mental health as a core pillar of its future strategy.
Series: Understanding Practical Bioethics (Session 3)
Organized by: Christian Medical Association of India (CMAI) in partnership with The Centre for Bioethics and CIHSR.
The Doctors Section of CMAI successfully conducted the third instalment of its "Understanding Practical Bioethics" webinar series on May 14, 2026. This session focused on one of the most challenging areas of clinical practice: "Ethical Considerations for End‑of‑Life Care in Neurological Diseases." The session was hosted by Dr Abhijeet Sangma and opened with a word of welcome by Dr Ronald Lalthanmawia (General Secretary, CMAI). Dr Ronald emphasized the increasing relevance of ethical clarity in modern medicine, where clinical dilemmas are becoming more complex. The resource person for the session was Dr Jeyaraj Pandian, Principal and Professor & Head of Neurology at CMC Ludhiana and President of the World Stroke Organization. The discussion was moderated by Dr Roopa Verghese, Executive Director of The Centre for Bioethics.
Key Clinical and Ethical Takeaways
Dr Pandian provided a deep dive into the nuances of neurological care, distinguishing between acute conditions like stroke and chronic degenerative diseases like ALS and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).
Core Discussion Points:
The webinar demonstrated a wide geographic and professional reach:
The Role of Holistic Care
A significant portion of the session was dedicated to the "caretaker burden." Dr Pandian and Dr Verghese emphasized that in Christian institutions, the role of the Chaplain and psychological counsellor is vital. Providing spiritual and emotional support to families helps them navigate the "what-if" guilt and make bold, dignity-focused decisions for their loved ones.
Looking Ahead: This session concluded the current focus on end-of-life ethics. The series will continue with a new theme next month.
Next Session: Topic: Law, Policy, and Digital Governance: Implications for Healthcare
Tentative Date: June 11, 2026
The recording and resources from this session is made available on the CMAI YouTube Channel. For further information or to access bioethics modules for your hospital staff, please contact the CMAI Doctors Section.
The staff of small hospitals face big challenges from rising patient expectations, expanding regulatory requirements and the rapid pace of change in healthcare. On-the-job training and experience may not be sufficient for them to meet these challenges. The Christian Medical College Vellore (CMC) has joined hands with the Christian Medical Association of India (CMAI) to introduce a blended learning programme designed for employees of mission hospitals: Diploma in Hospital Administration. The course will help them acquire the knowledge and skills needed to become efficient managers and leaders while continuing to serve their institutions. It will help them to integrate theoretical and scientific frameworks with their own experience to implement best practices in their hospitals. Moreover, it will help them to develop the confidence and ability to deal with a range of management issues.

An interactive and practical case study oriented 6 days contact class was held at Vellore, Tamil Nadu. 26 participants from 14 member institutions of CMAI, representing 11 States, participated in the course. Action plan to take forward the initiative in their respective institutions has been prepared by each participant. 5 CMAI staff who have also been trained will follow up and guide the institutions in implementing the action plan along with Department of Community Health of CMAI.
CMAI intends to develop a multiprofessional team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapist, occupational therapists, counsellors, faith leaders/chaplains and community workers in 5 different hospitals from different regions of CMAI. The team will be trained to provide a comprehensive mental healthcare for staff, patients and the community.
The expected outcome is that the centres: a. Outline a relevant comprehensive action plan to address the mental health service gap in the community they serve. b. Implement the action plan over a period of 6 months and document the outcomes.
In healthcare settings, managerial skills play a crucial role in effectively leading diverse verticals, irrespective of professional differences. While patient care remains the highest priority, it is equally important to uphold the mission, prepare employees in alignment with that mission, and efficiently manage resources to ensure optimal care. Considering this requirement, HMAP section (formerly known as the Administrators Section) developed a two-week residential management workshop specifically designed to address emerging dimensions effectively.
A key highlight of this workshop is its outstanding resource persons who are subject matter experts with rich personal experiences and proven best practices, providing participants with invaluable firsthand insights.
