Historical fact: St. Luke’s Hospitalis a rural base Christian Hospital is one of the oldest and the only hospital during undivided Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district. This hospital has begun the Medical work in Upper Assam in Chabua in 1923 by the Christian Missionaries to cater the health needs of the poor and needy peoples of nearby villages and Tea gardens.
During 1920’s there was hardly any medical facilities in villages and even in Tea Gardens the “Dhais”, who were untrained, performed as Midwives and due to that the rate of maternal and infant mortality was very high. Seeing all these the then Bishop Rev. Packenham Walsh decided to start some medical work in the area as a witness to the caring love of God for humanity, especially for the rural poor. He sent an appeal to SPG (Society for Propagation of Gospel), London to send a Nursing Sister. The SPG offered the post to Miss Helen Slawson, who accepted it as an adventurous challenge and came to Chabua in 1923.
