Interesting Historical fact: Started in the year 1926 by Nurse Millie Marvin as Women and Children Hospital.
Stand out achievement: Awarded one of the cleanest Hospital in Guwahati, First Human Milk Bank in North East India.
One of the oldest centres of healing in Guwahati, Satribari Christian Hospital caters to mostly low income General and Tribal communities. The primary focus of medical services is Neo–Natal care. However, during the second wave of covid during February- May 2021, the care shifted to Covid-19 category C patients.
Following the government of Assam guidelines, the hospital allocated 10 beds out of its capacity of 100 for Covid 19 patients. Due to lack of fully equipped ICU, intubation could not be provided to covid patients. Apart from the out-patients, most of the staff working in the hospital became infected with covid infection and were treated as in-patients. As the hospital infrastructure is old and outdated, the staff made efforts to work with the existing resources and facilities available. Help and support of medicines was extended by LION’s club of Guwahati. Necessary support of PPE kits and Oxygen Concentrator could not reach in time which impeded the handling of Covid-19 patients. These handicaps were a deterrent to proactive networking with the state government for accommodating more patients in the hospital during the second wave.
A vaccination programme was carried out in which a total of 681 persons were vaccinated with COVISHIELD. Among these, 265 were under the age of 45 and 361 were above the age of 45. This initiative will continue with the support of the state government.
In the current scenario of more than 4 districts in the state declared as having more than 10% positivity rate, fear of influx in Guwahati, being a central junction for movement of people is real. The hospital aims to be prepared to reach out to patients.
There is an urgent need to be prepared with pharmaceutical and diagnostic stock in preparation for the foreseen 3rd wave of covid. Getting the ICU fully equipped with ventilator and oxygen (with concentrators), capacitated nursing staff, more doctors, to deal with in coming patients is the need of hour for this hospital.
