Palliative Care Initiatives

CMAI has been involved in the area of palliative care since the early 1990s. It has held series of workshops, supported by institutional visits, structured capacity building and an active mentoring process.

Goal: To strengthen Palliative Care services in India

I. National Fellowship in Palliative Medicine

I. National Fellowship in Palliative Medicine

CMAI, in collaboration with the Institute of Palliative Medicine, Kozhikode, is conducting a 1-year distance learning ‘National Fellowship in Palliative Medicine’ for MBBS and BDS. This fellowship programme will help to build capacity of healthcare professionals and institutions and equip them to render much-needed palliative care services to the people of this country.

Aims

  • To give training to doctors so that they receive the knowledge and professional skills to render palliative care services.
  • To give new insights and perspectives and positively influence their outlook towards the practice of Medicine i.e. from being medicine & doctor centric to person centric and being an equal partner in a team.

More than 100 Doctors from within and outside the country has been trained

 II. National Fellowship in Palliative Nursing

Palliative medicine and nursing are integral parts of the ‘wholistic care’ rendered to those affected by any incurable disease or chronic debilitating or end stage medical disease, including care of the elderly. Special knowledge and skills are needed to care for and treat these patients because they have special needs.

  • To give training to nurses so that they receive the knowledge and professional skills to render palliative care services.
  • To give new insights and perspectives and positively influence their outlook towards the practice of nursing i.e. from being medicine centric to person centric and being an equal partner in a team.

III. Palliative Care Campaign

III. Palliative Care Campaign

The initial focus of palliative care workshops were held with church leaders, chaplains, counselors from hospital and churches. This includes spiritual and support care for the palliative care patients.

More inputs were provided for healthcare professionals in various settings with the emphasis being on mission hospitals challenging and encouraging as a Christian mandate to holistic care.
